If you happen to own any of the Penryn Macs mentioned above, the macOS High Sierra Patch Tool written by DOSDude1 will make running the latest software possible. It apparently uses the official Apple Firmware updater as part of the process. Early-2009 or newer Mac Mini or white MacBook (Mac Mini 3,1, MacBook 5,2) Early-2008 or newer Xserve (Xserve 2,1, Xserve 3,1). The original hack is at Which links to a user-made utility to allow this to be changed in both directions, 4,1 to 5,1 & back again.
I have never personally done this, mine was bought already upgraded. Keep the card under an angle and slide it into the slot. As the card in my Mac Pro is, clearly, too old for this LE malarky I was wondering whether its possible to purchase a newer internal card and fit it (my preference) or what the other alternatives are.
The thing about the 4,1 & 5,1 is they are so similar, it's possible to turn one into the other with a simple firmware update. I currently own a Mac Pro (early 2009) and Ive noticed a lot of media reports in to some of the new features of Yosemite, namely Continuity, that will require Bluetooth LE. Though the Mac Pro 4,1 won't run Sierra, the Mac Pro 5,1 will.Īpparently, the Sierra installer only looks for the 5,1 firmware, not the 2009 tag.
